About Baltimore
This major U.S. seaport is situated closer to major Midwestern markets than any other major seaport on the East Coast. Historically a working-class port town, Baltimore has sometimes been dubbed a "city of neighborhoods," with over 300 identified districts. Other downtown areas include Fells Point, once a favorite entertainment spot for sailors is now refurbished. With its cobbled stone streets and its waterfront location, Historic Fells Point has long been a favorite attraction for young and old alike and was featured in the movie Sleepless in Seattle. Little Italy, located between the other two, is where much of Baltimore's Italian-American community is based. Mt. Vernon is located north of downtown and designated a National Landmark Historic District. It is one of the city's oldest neighborhoods and originally home to Baltimore's most wealthy and fashionable families. Baltimore has shifted to a service-oriented economy. Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Hospital, located in the northern part of Baltimore, are now the city's largest employers.
